Volkswagen Unveils Plans for Innovative New Technology

VW Trained ParkingWith advancements in modern technology, things we could have only imagined growing up are slowly becoming a reality, much quicker than we thought possible. Focusing on four key areas of possible innovation, Volkswagen lit up the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas by displaying its vision for the future.

“The two inventions of the century, the car and the computer, are gradually coming closer together. We need to design future mobility to be even more intelligent and even more networked,” said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen AG.

Volkswagen is preparing for a new age of technology in its vehicles by looking more into computer-controlled drive systems, app and smartphone integration, intuitive operation and autonomous and semi-autonomous driving. With advanced features like gesture control and trained parking in the works, cars as you know them may never be the same again.

Electric and hybrid models, which are heavily dependent on their computer systems inside, could see a drastic change thanks to VW’s plans. With computer-controlled systems, these vehicles will be able to automatically dock to inductive charging stations while using exterior lights to display the battery’s state of charge. Another big change will come later this year for VW drivers, as the automaker is rolling out MirrorLink, a new infotainment system that will integrate your smartphone more seamlessly than ever before.

You may also be able to control your infotainment system without ever placing a finger on the screen in the near future. With Volkswagen’s gesture control technology, cameras will detect not only the motions you are making with your hands, but also assign a meaning to them so you have more control over your ride. Additionally, VW is taking park assist technology to the next level. The latest innovation, Trained Parking, will use a camera to scan ahead to a parking space and then use computer control to take over semi-automatically, ensuring you park perfectly every time.
